Gas and generators in the home
Many of us are exploring alternative sources of power such as generators and gas so we are not as vulnerable to load-shedding and electricity tariff increases.
Gas
The benefits of installing gas in your home are as follows:
- Ovens and stoves use a lot of electricity, so it’s worth considering replacing your electric oven or hob with a gas model.
- You’ll save on electricity and still be able to cook and heat water during load-shedding.
- Gas heaters are an excellent alternative to electric heaters.
- Gas lamps are a good source of lighting as they cover large areas.
Households usually use gas cylinders rather than a fixed supply. Learn more about the differences

Approvals
Whichever you chose, make sure you use an approved gas installer.
When you install your gas supply you’ll need approval if:
- the quantity of LP (liquid petroleum) gas used or stored exceeds 38kg; or
- the quantity of flammable gas exceeds 200 litres.

Generators
Small stand-alone or standby generators are becoming more popular to minimise the inconvenience of load-shedding. Home generators are either operated in isolation from the City’s network (stand-alone) or tied to the grid (embedded).
Standby generators
Most small diesel generators are standby generators that operate separately from the City’s electrical network. These are also known as stand-alone generators.
Please note
Be considerate of your neighbours when using a stand-alone diesel generator. Noise levels shouldn’t exceed residual noise levels by more than 5dBAs. If the City receives a complaint, a notice to cease will be issued.
Embedded generators
Embedded generators are tied to the grid and are permanently installed on a property, allowing a seamless power use transition from grid to generator.
Most households wouldn't use an embedded generator for day to day household use unless it is a small scale photovoltaic (solar) system; here, households that meet certain embedded generation requirements have the option of feeding electricity back into the grid – “selling” it to the City.
